Geared toward pre-teens and teens as they face the roller coaster of high school and learn how to juggle all of life's challenges, this book is also a great reminder for adults to "chill" and deal with stress more healthfully. Written by Seattle-based author Deborah Reber, this book makes a great gift for the special older girls in your life who could use some reassurance that what they're experiencing is normal and that life can run more smoothly when you have some helpful, proven tools! Brianna met Debbie at the Girls on the Run of Puget Sound auction event where they both were featured speakers. Debbie is a former coach for Girls on the Run, a current Running Buddy for the program and a runner who made it a priority to run every day she worked on this book as a reminder to keep stress to a minimum for herself!
Both Sheila & Brianna used this book in their classrooms. It can be used as a resource in an elementary classroom, as a self-paced guide for middle and high schoolers, or even as a tool for adults who are trying to carve out a path to reach their goals. The positive, uplifting language and tone of the book are contagious, the graphics are intelligent but kid friendly, and the lessons it provides are easy to apply at any level. If you have a dream, or are nurturing the dreams in others . . . this is your book for helping discover the steps to make those dreams become realities!
A great resource for parents and mentors of young girls, Molly Barker's book is a tool to help adults reach out to girls at a critical time in their development - BEFORE they hit adolescence. Girls on Track chronicles Molly's own serious struggles with self-esteem through her youth and into adulthood, while providing hope-filled vignettes about girls touched and strengthened by the Girls on the Run program. Molly took the lessons she learned as she climbed out of the "girl box" (a phrase she coined and discusses in the book) and hit the ground running to prevent other grils from falling into the same trap - she formed Girls on the Run (now an international organization) and shares parent/daughter versions of the curriculum in Girls on Track.

Kids Running: Have Fun, Get Faster & Go Farther by Carol Goodrow

This is Carol Goodrow's third book, released in Spring 2008. Read Sheila's full review of this book on Brianna's Blog: Girl Who Loves to Run.

This is an inspirational read for women AND men! Kathrine Switzer is the gender barrier breaker that paved the way for Olympic Marathoners Joan Benoit and Deena Kastor. As the first woman to run the Boston Marathon (she registered for the race as K. Switzer), she brought attention to the strength and abilities that women have in the field of runnin.  MARATHON WOMAN chronicles her devlopment as a runner, the memorable day she literally fought to stay in the Boston Marathon and her successful work to have the Olympics include the Marathon distance for women. Switzer's writing style makes for a fun and easy read - you'll soon feel that you've known her for years and look forward to a day when you can join her for a run, or at least meet her at a race where she's a featured speaker!

The Treasure of Health and Happiness
by Carol Goodrow

This is Carol's second book, a chapter book for young children. It is a favorite of the school children Carol visits, as kids of all fitness levels can relate to the main character, Hannah. An adaptation of this book would make an excellent school play!
